Gamelan Player
Hindu-Buddhist culture was started the emergence of the Indonesian gamelan. But Dr. J.L.A. Brandes (1989) have theorized that long before the emergence of Indian cultural influence, the Javanese culture has had the skills or knowledge that one of them is the gamelan. Gamelan name comes from the Javanese language, gamel which means hitting or beating, in Java gamelan also known as kawariwitan or gangsa.
Gamelan instruments are usually classified into 4 sections, membranophone (the sound produced by the skin membrane that was hit), Ideofon (the sound produced by vibration of instruments), Aerofon (the sound produced by vibration of the air by blowing) and Kordofon (the sound produced by vibration strings are plucked or swiped).
Tuning and making the gamelan orchestra is a complex process. Gamelan Tuning using four ways, namely slendro, pelog, “Degung” (a special area or Sundanese of West Java), and “madenda” (also known as diatonic), the same as the original minor scale widely used in Europe.
We have not only known gamelan in Indonesia but is worldwide. Please just look at the American Gamelan Institute, Gamelan in UK , Gamelan in Washington DC, Gamelan is introduced at the University of Michigan and other places. Let us preserve Indonesian culture!
